New WSU researcher to focus on tree fruit diseases

A new faculty member at the Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center will focus on diseases in fruit after it is harvested – like gray mold that afflicts otherwise appetizing strawberries and blueberries.

Achour Amiri will join the Wenatchee team Sept. 1, after finishing work at the Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center of the University of Florida.

Fungicide resistance in post-harvest fungal diseases like gray mold is one of his specialties, as is disease forecasting.

Originally from Algeria, he worked on Penicillium diseases of tree fruit for his master’s degree in Belgium and Ph.D. in France.
