Apple Growers Concerned About Warm Weather

Unseasonably warm temperatures have area apple growers concerned.

Apples trees around the region are budding about three weeks early this year, and orchard owners are worried about the potential for another freeze, which would damage the buds.

“I never remember them this early. They’ve been out in April before, but never this early. This is definitely a concern with this weather with the way it’s been going up and down lately, so it’s warm now and chances are it’s going to get cold again,”said Scott Douglas.

He owns about 6,000 apple trees in Shoreham. He also owns about four acres of cherry trees, and says they’re even more susceptible to the weather because they’re a week ahead of the apples.
