Apple holdings lower than last year’s record totals

According to the U.S. Apple Association, fresh apple holdings on Jan. 1, 2016, totaled 90.5 million bushels, 20 percent below the record inventories (113.5 million bushels) reported for Jan. 1 of last year, and about equal to the five-year average of 90.7 million bushels.

Processing holdings on Jan. 1 totaled 38.8 million bushels, 6 percent below 2015 and 8 percent above the five-year average.

The total number of apples in storage on Jan. 1 was 129.3 million bushels, 16 percent below last January’s record total of 157.4 million bushels.
