Aug 22, 2011Meijer to expand ‘Home Grown’ buying, which benefits some West Michigan farmers
Meijer stores increased their buying from Midwestern produce farmers by 5 percent last year, and are on track to do so again this year, the retailer said.
The “Home Grown” buying program works with farmers in the five states where Meijer has stores: Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, said Scott Calandra, a produce buyer for Meijer. Meijer launched the program in 2009 and estimates it has spent about $60 million buying from Midwestern farms. The Muskegon Chronicle
