Oct 1, 2012Michigan fruit and vegetable farmers are in line to get help from USDA
Michigan growers of fruits, vegetables and other specialty crops are in line to get more than $1.34 million in grants aimed at strengthening their position in the marketplace, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced today.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the 25 grants to Michigan farmers are among $101 million worth of grants to specialty crop farmers around the U.S. Download the complete list (PDF).
About $55 million will be invested in 56 specialty crop block grants to states that fund 748 initiatives for specialty crops, according to a USDA news release.
Another $46 million will support “new and continuing research and extension activities to address challenges and opportunities for growers and businesses that rely on a sustainable, profitable specialty crops industry,” the news release said. MLIVE
