May 15, 2013Senate ag committee passes farm bill
On May 14, the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry amended and passed its 2013 Farm Bill by a vote of 15 to 5. The legislation will move to the floor of the Senate for debate and amendment, according to the Center for Rural Affairs.
The bipartisan proposal will yield a total of $23 billion dollars in deficit reduction in agriculture programs by eliminating unnecessary direct payment subsidies, consolidating programs to end duplication and cracking down on food assistance abuse, according to the office Sen. Debbie Stabenow, chairwoman of the committee.
The bill could come to the floor for debate by the full Senate soon, perhaps as early as next week. The Agriculture Committee in the House of Representatives is poised to begin debating its Farm Bill draft, according to the center.
