Storage Control Systems founder remembered

The founder of Storage Control Systems, Inc. in Sparta, Mich., passed away Feb. 9 at age 81.

Caryl A. Schaefer, who graduated from Sparta High School in 1947 and went on to earn a degree in horticulture sciences at Michigan State University, formed Storage Control Systems in 1981. A manufacturer and supplier of atmosphere-modifying and monitoring equipment, the company continues to be operated by his son, Jim.

Schaefer was a Korean War veteran, accomplished pilot and member of the Original Michigan Fiddlers Association and Antique Farm Power Club. He was also an amateur radio operator and active community volunteer.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Doris; children Cheryl Sheer (Steve), Cindy Grodus (Tom) and Jim Schaefer (Jill); 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
