Obituary: Peter Mondavi Sr.

Peter Mondavi Sr., of Charles Krug Winery, died Saturday, Feb. 20, at the age of 101.

Here’s more from the San Francisco Business Times:

Mondavi is known for being an innovator in the wine business, having studied cold fermentation on white and rosé wines and later touring European wine regions. He led Charles Krug as the first winery in Napa Valley to import French oak barrels for aging, now a common practice for winemakers.

Mondavi took on the role of president and CEO of the winery when his mother died in 1976. Mondavi’s parents bought the Charles Krug Winery in 1943, when Napa Valley was known more for its inexpensive jug wine.

He officially retired in 2015 at the age of 100 and turned over the day-to-day operations to his sons, Marc and Peter Jr. He is survived by them, his daughter Siena, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
