Arctic apples honors essential worker in giveaway

Summerland, British Columbia, Canada-based Okanagan Specialty Fruits, the agricultural company behind the non-browning Arctic apples, has honored Barbara Ortega, a security guard in California who has been working on the front lines to protect produce and people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a news release, as the winner of the Arctic apples Mother’s Day giveaway, Ortega received a 12-month subscription to a monthly beauty box tailored to her preferences.

Entrants nominated moms to win by submitting photographs on Facebook using #arcticapplescontest and tagging the Arctic apples Facebook page. Ortga was nominated by Michelle, her daughter’s future mother-in-law. Michelle’s winning entry was selected from a group of entrants for highlighting the essential role that Ortega fulfills in our community.

“I was really excited,” said Ortega. “My husband and I avoid going out as much as possible because we both work in essential roles and can’t afford to get sick. It will be such a treat to pamper myself at home with this prize.”

Ortega works as a security guard for a private security company. She protects critical units in the produce industry, safeguarding employees and food sources. For her, the work is rewarding because she knows how her essential role keeps others safe.

“We are very proud to honor Barbara with this prize,” said Neal Carter, president at Okanagan Specialty Fruits.
