California May peach harvest down, says USDA

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service reported that California Peach harvest in May was down slightly from last year.

California’s May production was about 495,000 tons, according to the USDA-NASS Crop production summary. That number was down 14.7 percent from the previous year.

Fresh California Peaches are typically available May through September.

The California Canning Peach Association wrote in its April newsletter that a cold spring may impact fruit set on canning peach varieties.

“While many peach growers reported that they were happy with this year’s peach bloom, colder than normal temperatures this spring appear to have impacted our 2018 fruit set,” according to the association.
