Ohio Produce Growers & Marketers Association mourns death of Dick Bachman

The Ohio Produce Growers and Marketers Association would like to keep the family of Dick Bachman in our thoughts and prayers for their recent loss.

Richard Lee “Dick” Bachman of Carroll, Ohio passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on Friday, April 2, 2022. He was 86 years old.

Dick was born January 30, 1936 in Carroll, Ohio to his parents Howard and Gustina Bachman and was the youngest of three. Dick graduated from Carroll High School in 1954 and was an active member of the Future Farmers of America, receiving his State Farmer Degree, and the Carroll High School Band where he played the clarinet. He attended The Ohio State University then served in the United States Armed Forces.

Dick was born into a farming family where he developed a love of agriculture. He joined his parents as a third generation farmer to operate Sunny Hill Fruit Farm, where they grew fruit and raised cattle. While showing dairy cattle at the Pickaway County Fair, he met the love of his life, Joann Dale Fausnaugh, and they were married for 64 years. Dick and Joann had two sons, Richard Gregg and Brian Lynn.

Dick was a long time President and Board Member of the Fruit Growers Marketing Association and Ohio Fruit Growers Society. He was always known for his progressive ideas and forward thinking in the apple industry. He was also an active member of David Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canal Winchester. Dick and Joann spent many years as “snow birds” where they lived in Florida throughout the winter months and enjoyed many friendships and outings.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Gustina Bachman; brother, Paul Bachman and son, Brian Bachman. Dick leaves behind his wife, Joann; sister, Betty Klamfoth; son, Gregg (Christi) Bachman; daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Doug) Majors; grandchildren, Krystin (Brady) Miller, Justin (Amber) Bachman, Leanna (Sam) Tennant, Jordan (Kipley) Bachman, Brandon Bachman and Lacie Bachman. Great grandchildren include Karson and Baylee Miller, Colton Tennant, Levi Bachman and two on the way.

Dick will be long remembered for his bear hugs, firm handshakes and shoulder squeezes along with his good natured, teasing personality.

Calling hours will be Thursday, April 7 from 4-8 pm at Dwayne Spence Funeral Home in Canal Winchester. Guests can also visit the family from 10-11 am at David Evangelical Lutheran Church on Friday, April 8 prior to the funeral service which begins at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dick’s memory to David Evangelical Lutheran Church or FAIRHOPE Hospice and Palliative Care.
