Farmers say wage hike would devastate NY agriculture

New York farmers spoke out Wednesday against a plan to raise the state’s minimum wage to $10.50 an hour or higher, saying the increase would strain income and put farmers at an even greater competitive disadvantage.

Unlike other industries, farmers can’t simply raise consumer prices when labor prices go up, said Dean Norton, New York Farm Bureau president. Raising the minimum wage “is not a wise strategy to support agriculture or business in the state of New York,” said Norton, a dairy farmer from Genesee County.
