United Fresh adds Emily Griep to food safety team

Emily Griep has joined the staff of United Fresh as Manager, Food Safety, reporting to their Vice President of Food Safety & Technology, Dr. Jennifer McEntire.

Griep recently received her Ph.D. from Cornell University as a USDA National Needs Fellow in the area of ‘food safety for a global economy’, focusing on food science and technology and minoring in international agriculture & rural development as well as nutrition. She brings to the association technicalexpertise in processing technologies and industry experience as a quality associate and quality engineer with General Mills.

“United Fresh has a long history of supporting the food safety needs of the fresh produce industry. The addition of Dr. Griep to the team expands our ability to respond to individual member requests and also proactively develop materials and deliver trainings that benefit the produce safety community” says McEntire.

In this newly created position, Griep will support some of United Fresh’s ongoing initiatives such as the Harmonized Standard, lead new projects that support the association’s scientific and policy objectives, and represent United Fresh to members and other stakeholders.

“The produce industry represents a diverse community with unique challenges,” says Griep. “I’m excited to jump in and use my experience and training to help advance the industry’s food safety efforts.”

A native of Minnesota, Griep received her BS in Food Science and Technology from Iowa State University during which she conducted internships centered on environmental monitoring programs. During the course of her doctoral studies, Griep had the opportunity to serve as a visiting researcher at Embrapa, the Brazilian agricultural research organization.

She will officially begin her position at United Fresh in July, and will attend the United Fresh Food Safety & Technology Council meeting in Chicago on June 25, held in conjunction with United FreshTEC Expo and Confernce.
