First Michigan Agritourism Summit scheduled

Michigan’s agricultural and tourism sectors are set to converge at the inaugural Agritourism Summit and pre-summit farm tour.

The event, scheduled for May 7-8 in Traverse City, Michigan, will be hosted by Michigan State University Extension and its partners.

The summit’s goal is to harness the economic potential of agritourism while fostering collaboration and addressing challenges within the industry, according to a news release.

Michigan agritourism summit logoAgriculture and tourism are vital components of Michigan’s economy, generating $105 billion and $3.1 billion, respectively. Recognizing the symbiotic relationship between these sectors, organizers seek to explore opportunities for farmers and local communities to leverage agritourism for sustainable economic development.

The two-day summit will feature educational sessions and networking opportunities, drawing participants from various sectors including farmers, municipal officials, agritourism businesses and community leaders. By facilitating dialogue and sharing best practices, the event aims to lay the groundwork for a resilient and thriving agritourism industry.

PRE-SUMMIT FARM TOUR

On May 7, a pre-summit farm tour will offer an immersive experience, with visits scheduled for multiple agritourism operations in Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore renowned establishments such as Jacobs Farm, Leelanau Cheese, 9 Bean Rows Farmstead, Tandem Ciders and Farm Club, while sampling local culinary delights.

AGRITOURISM SUMMIT

The summit will convene at the Hagerty Center on May 8. The agenda includes discussions on the economics of farming, regulatory considerations and strategies for fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Notable speakers will share insights on navigating the regulatory landscape and overcoming barriers to success in agritourism.

The summit is tailored to farmers, agritourism operators, elected officials and stakeholders involved in the agrifood system.

The event is made possible through sponsors including MSU Extension, Traverse City Tourism, Northwestern Michigan College and Michigan Farm Bureau, among others.
