Sep 24, 2024IFPA Policy Retreat sets advocacy agenda for 2025 amid key industry challenges
The International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) hosted a Policy Retreat this month, bringing together volunteer leaders from the U.S. Government Relations Council and Political Advisory Committee. Held at National Harbor, the retreat focused on shaping the advocacy agenda for 2025, with a strong emphasis on industry-driven priorities.
“This is an incredibly important time for our industry as we work to finalize the Farm Bill and approach the U.S. elections,” said Rebeckah Adcock, vice president of U.S. government relations at IFPA. “The most impactful information lawmakers hear is directly from our members. This retreat is about educating ourselves on key issues and setting the advocacy agenda for next year.”
The retreat featured joint sessions discussing the IFPA’s strategic plan, industry research, and policy challenges. Bret Erickson, chair of the U.S. Government Relations Council and senior vice president at Little Bear Produce, and Tony Freytag, chair for the Political Advisory Committee and executive vice president at Crunch Pak, also shared their insights on how government decisions affect the fresh produce sector.
“Building relationships and sharing our stories with lawmakers ensures our voices are heard. The more we engage, the more policymakers can understand our challenges,” Freytag said in regards to the value of industry participation in advocacy efforts.
In the afternoon, the Political Advisory Committee focused on FreshPAC and grassroots initiatives, while the U.S. Government Relations Council addressed policy priorities for 2024 and 2025, including the ongoing Farm Bill discussions and labor regulations.
“The success of the Policy Retreat underscores the critical role advocacy plays in shaping the future of our industry,” Erickson said.
IFPA’s 2024 public policy agenda includes issues such as labor, nutrition and supply chain efficiency.
