Ohio Grape Industries Committee launches Vineyard Expansion Assistance Program

The Ohio Grape Industries Committee (OGIC) has introduced the Vineyard Expansion Assistance Program (VEAP), designed to bolster grape production in Ohio. This initiative is aimed at increasing the availability of high-quality, locally-grown grapes to support Ohio wineries, farmers’ markets and retail outlets.

About VEAP

Due to the current shortfall in local grape production, many Ohio wineries and markets have sourced grapes from other states. VEAP addresses this issue by funding the planting of new vineyards or the expansion and replacement of existing ones. The program’s goal is to ensure a stable supply of premium grapes, enhancing the quality and reputation of Ohio wines through the Ohio Quality Wine (OQW) program.

Financial assistance

VEAP offers financial assistance covering the cost of grape vines, with eligible growers able to apply for up to $1,500 per half-acre, capping at three acres or $9,000. The program’s limited funds will be allocated by the VEAP Working Group, composed of OGIC members, OSU researchers, and industry stakeholders, who will review applications and recommend funding decisions to the OGIC.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must be Ohio residents with a solid business plan integrating grape production into the supply chain. Eligible vineyards must plant at least one-half acre in spring 2025 and adhere to strict site and variety selection guidelines overseen by OSU viticulture staff. Reimbursement will be contingent upon meeting these guidelines and undergoing post-planting evaluations.

Applications

The application process is open now through June 29, 2024. The final funding decisions will be announced on Aug. 14, 2024.

Interested growers can obtain application forms and further information by contacting Christy Eckstein, executive director for OGIC. For more information, visit Ohio Department of Agriculture’s website.
