WSU to plant vineyard mechanically, public invited

Washington State University is inviting the public to a demonstration on mechanized vineyard planting.

The event is 10 a.m. to noon Pacific on June 2 at the WSU-Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center in Prosser. The demonstration is free, but online registration is required; more information including exact location will be sent to registered attendees.

While the field day will showcase mechanized planting, the new vineyard will be used to study the influence of vineyard management practices on soil health, a collaborative project between USDA and WSU scientists. Those involved in the project will be available to answer questions about the planting method and soil health study.

Although the featured crop is grapes, the mechanized planting process is adaptable to many woody perennial fruit crops, according to a news release. Vinomatos, a Portugal-based company that specializes in mechanical planting, is providing the service.
