Apple holdings continue declining

Fresh and processing apple inventories are reported lower in early December this year than in the previous year, according to a Dec. 10 report from the U.S. Apple Association (USApple).

According to the survey, the total number of apples in storage on Dec. 1 was 168 million bushels, 3% less than last December’s total of 173 million bushels and 10% more than the 5-year average for that date.

Fresh apple holdings this December totaled 122 million bushels, 2% less than the inventories reported for last December and 13% more than the December five-year average. Processing holdings totaled 46 million bushels, 4% less than last year on Dec. 1 and 5% more than the December five-year average.

The seven top apple producing states, Washington, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, and Virginia reported decreasing storage volume while Oregon noted an increase.

All other states, except for Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Ohio, reported storage declines.

The leading varieties in storage, in order by volume, were Gala, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Cosmic Crisp, Pink Lady/Cripps Pink, Golden Delicious, Envy, Ambrosia, Rome, McIntosh, Idared, York and Empire.
