Govenor Snyder proclaims October Michigan Apple Month

Gov. Rick Snyder has once again declared October Michigan Apple Month recognizing the importance of the Michigan apple industry.

Michigan Apple growers dedicate their time to operate 825 family-run farms with over 11.3 million apple trees, covering 35,500 acres, in Michigan. Apples are the largest and most valuable fruit crop in the Great Lakes State.

Michigan is known as the variety state, with 16 different delicious varieties providing an array of flavors. Some of the most popular varieties are Honeycrisp, Gala and Fuji.

“Passionate Michigan apple growers have continued the tradition of growing apples for many generations and continue to produce the best tasting apples in the world,” said Diane Smith, executive director of the Michigan Apple Committee. “It means a lot to the growers that Governor Snyder continues to recognize their hard work and dedication.”

This year’s Michigan Apple crop is estimated to be 28 million bushels, according to the official crop estimate announced Aug. 24 at the USApple Outlook meeting in Chicago.

“Consumers can find Michigan Apples at over 200 orchards and  farm markets, or look for bags or stickers indicating ‘Michigan Apples’ at grocery stores,” said Smith.
