Feb 15, 2024Group advocates for specialty crops in Farm Bill
Amid ongoing farm bill discussions on Capitol Hill, the co-chairs of the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance (SCFBA) gathered in Washington, D.C., to advocate for America’s $64.7 billion specialty crop industry.
The group recently met with U.S. House and Senate Agriculture Committee leadership, including Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow and Sen. John Boozman, Ranking Member of the Committee.
“We have heard that money is tight and that limits the ability for Congress to write a ‘transformative’ new farm bill,” National Potato Council CEO and SCFBA co-chair Kam Quarles said in a statement.
“However, a comparatively small investment in specialty crop priorities can be transformative for the fruit and vegetable industry that currently receives such limited attention from U.S. farm policy.”
Other SCFBA co-chairs are Cathy Burns, CEO of the International Fresh Produce Association; Mike Joyner, president of the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association; and Dave Puglia, president and CEO of Western Growers.
