Michigan Announces Prices for Processing Apples

The Michigan Processing Apple Growers Marketing Committee announced last Friday it had negotiated minimum processing prices with several Michigan processors for the 2008 crop.

Manager Dawn Drake said nine processors agreed to the following minimum price schedule:

The price for apples 2 inches and up in size is $17 per 100 pounds of Jonathan; $16 for JonaGold, Spy and Crispin; $15 for IdaRed;and $13.50 for Golden Delicious. The price negotiated is $13 per cwt. for other hard varieties and $12 for soft varieties.

Straight loads of juice apples were pegged at $8.50 per cwt. Loads of peeler apples less than 2 inches in diameter were placed at $7.50.

Processors the committee said were in agreement with the minimum price schedule included Birds Eye Foods, Burnette Foods, Coloma Frozen Foods, Gerber Products, Knouse Foods, New Era Canning, Peterson Farms, Sill Farms Market and Smeltzer Orchard Co.
Processors in agreement with the minimum $8.50 juice price are Aseltine Cider, Burnette Foods, Coloma Frozen Foods, Gerber Products and Peterson Farms.

Cherry Growers Inc. and Mason County Fruit Packers opted out of 2008 negotiations.
