Michigan farmer Josh Wunsch honored by Michigan Processing Apple Growers

Third-generation farmer Josh Wunsch of Traverse City, Mich., has been awarded the Michigan Processing Apple Growers of the Michigan Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Association (MACMA) Distinguished Service Award for 2012.

Wunsch was first named to the MACMA board in 1988 and became vice president in 1999. He retired in November.

During those years, Wunsch often represented the state’s apple growers in Washington, D.C., where he is “well-known in the congressional offices and respected for his knowledge and expertise,” said Dawn Drake, manager of MACMA’s Processing Apple Growers Division.

“He helped get our apple industry back on track,” said Drake, presenting Wunsch with the award at the organization’s annual meeting March 5 in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“Josh has always understood the critical importance of collective bargaining and has been eager to identify, encourage and mentor new leaders within the industry,” Drake said. “Josh’s straightforward approach, dedication, leadership and hard work have made him one of the most respected growers in Michigan agriculture today.”
