Michigan processing apple prices negotiated

The Michigan Processing Apple Growers (MPAG) Marketing Committee has negotiated the following minimum processing apple prices for the 2014 crop:

  • Hard varieties (2.5 inches and up): $12.50/cwt.
  • Soft varieties (2.5 inches and up): $10.00/cwt.

The following processors agreed with the above minimum price schedule: Coloma Frozen Foods, Gerber Products Co., Knouse Foods, Peterson Farms, Pinnacle Foods and Smeltzer Orchard Co.

Burnette Foods, Cherry Growers, Indian Summer and Materne USA opted out of negotiations, according to MPAG.

Because of the ongoing competitive nature of the apple juice business, the marketing committee chose not to negotiate a minimum juice price or undersize price for the 2014 season. Ultimately, the bidding process could come at the growers’ expense, according to MPAG.

The following processors will be purchasing juice apples and determining prices at the time of sale: Aseltine Cider Co., Gerber Products Co. and Peterson Farms.
