Vermont apple crop survives Irene

When Scott Farm Orchard Manager Zeke Goodband heard that Hurricane Irene was charting its path toward Vermont, he thought about the stories he has heard about the Hurricane of 1938.
Photos from that storm show apple trees split and torn up from the severity of the wind, and with the bulk of Goodband’s projected harvest still hanging on the trees, he kept an eye on the forecast and hoped for the best.
"I remember photos of whole orchards lying on their sides," Goodband said last week, after Irene had largely spared the apple trees in Vermont from the worst of its devastation. "But weather is the one thing you really can’t do much about." Brattleboro Reformer
