Lack of seasonal workers puts Michigan farmers in a pickle

Fred Leitz has watched some of his family’s southwest Michigan vegetable crop go unpicked this summer because of seasonal worker shortages that are plaguing the state’s agriculture industry.

At times, the fourth-generation vegetable and fruit grower and his three brothers have had half the laborers they needed. Other producers say they’re getting by, but may be reluctant to admit the problem publicly for business reasons, said Craig Anderson, manager of agricultural labor and safety services for the Michigan Farm Bureau.
