U.S. apple estimate increases 10 percent over 2013 final crop

The U.S. Apple Association has announced its estimate of the size of the 2014 U.S. apple crop: 263.8 million bushels.

The 2014 estimate represents a 10 percent increase over 2013’s final crop of 243 million bushels, and a 17 percent increase over the five-year average (225.9 million bushels).

Here’s a regional breakdown:

In the Eastern states, the 2014 estimate is 55.9 million bushels, 10 percent greater than the 2013 crop and 5 percent greater than the five-year average.

The Midwest estimate is 33.6 million bushels, down 2 percent from 2013 and 36 percent above the five-year average.

In the Western states, the 2014 estimate is 174.2 million bushels, up 13 percent from 2013 and 18 percent greater than the five-year average.
