Total number of apples in storage on Jan. 1 is 8.4% less than year ago

The January 2021 edition of the U.S. Apple Association’s Market News is now available. This is the third report on the 2020 apple crop.

According to the survey, this year’s fresh apple holdings on Jan. 1, 2021, totaled 90.3 million bushels, 13.1% less than the inventories reported for Jan. 1 of last year.

Processing holdings totaled 41.6 million bushels, 3.7%  more than last year on Jan. 1.

The total number of apples in storage on Jan. 1, 2021, was 131.9 million bushels, 8.4% less than last January’s total of 144.0 million bushels and 4.1% below the 5-year average for that date.

This report captures 97% of the national storage capacity, according to Christopher Gerlach, director of industry analytics for USApple.
