Washington State University tree fruit crew reschedules cherry breeding field day

Washington State University Tree Fruit Extension will hold a Cherry Breeding Program Field Day on July 7 from 9 -11:30 a.m. (PDT).

Due to the excessive heat wave that Washington state is currently facing, this event was rescheduled from July 1 to July 7.

It will be held at WSU Prosser IAREC, the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (24106 N Bunn Road, Prosser, Washington, 99350), Pear Acres.

Join us to learn about the Cherry Breeding Program, tour the cherry crossing house and seedling blocks, and get updated information of the studies performed by the team.

AGENDA

Breeding Program Tour

8:00 am: Tour of cherry crossing hoop house and seedling blocks, overview of breeding program

8:45 am: Introduction of advanced selections (Phase 2, Phase3)

Student Presentations

9:05 am: “Improving fruit set in hand-pollinated crosses, enhancing success of embryo rescue for early ripening crosses” by Rainier Peters.

9:20 am: “Cold hardiness: screening and gene expression analysis” by Jon Magby

9:35 am: “Breeding for firmness and cracking resistance” by Per McCord (for Wes Crump)

Little Cherry Disease

9:50 am: Visit Pear Acres (Little Cherry Disease screening trial)

10:30 am: Adjourn.
