U.S. apple storage declines in May

U.S. apple storage is continuing to decline.

On May 12, the U.S. Apple Association via its USAppleTracker report reported the total number of apples in storage on May 1 was 72 million bushels, 5% less than last May’s total of 76 million bushels and 16% higher than the 5-year average for that date.

Fresh apple holdings in May totaled 52 million bushels, 2% less than the inventories reported for last May and 19% more than the March five-year average.

Processing holdings totaled 20 million bushels, 12% less than last year on May 1 and 9% more than the May five-year average. 

Except for Oregon, all of the seven top apple-producing states — Washington, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia and California — reported decreasing storage volume for the time period. Oregon and New Hampshire were the only states that saw storage declines.

The leading varieties in storage, in order by volume, were:

  • Granny Smith
  • Cosmic Crisp
  • Honeycrisp
  • Pink Lady/Cripps Pink
  • Fuji
  • Golden Delicious
  • Envy
  • Ambrosia
  • Idared
  • Rome
  • McIntosh
  • York
  • Mutsu/Crispin
  • Cortland
  • Empire
