Arctic Apples seeks commercial approval for Fuji variety

Okanagan Specialty Fruits (OSF) announced it formally submitted a petition to the USDA on Dec. 31, 2015, requesting the deregulation of its Arctic Fuji variety.

Arctic apple varieties have been genetically modified to be non-browning. OSF researchers create the non-browning apples by silencing polyphenol oxidase, the enzyme that initiates browning, according to the company.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Services approved OSF’s Arctic Golden and Arctic Granny varieties for commercial sale in February 2015.
