Truterra’s carbon payments top $5 million in 2022

Truterra, which offers consultation, tools and solutions on sustainability for agriculture businesses, paid more than $5 million in 2022 to farmers through its carbon storage program.

In the first two years of the program, Truterra, a Land O’Lakes company, has paid more than $9 million through the carbon program, for farmers who sequestered more than 462,000 metric tons of carbon.

Truterra offers sustainability tools and agronomic support from advisors, and the program pays based on actual carbon stored instead of a set per-acre rate.

“Farmers are fast realizing that Truterra’s farmer-friendly approach aims to strengthen the connection between sustainability and profitability,” Tom Ryan, Truterra president, said in a news release. “By working with and through the farmer’s trusted advisor, the carbon program has continued to achieve great success in its second year, and we look forward to continuing to meet farmers where they are in their sustainability journey in order to help them make the best agronomic, economic and environmental decisions for their farms.”

The average payment in the program in 2022 was more than $18,000, with 273 farmers participating.

Truterra’s services include soil health assessments and plans to improve soil health.
