Washington Supreme Court hears case for farmers’ rights

The state Supreme Court heard brief arguments in person today in a case that could affect many workers in Washington. It covers whether the agricultural piece-rate workers should be paid separately during their breaks.

Hired laborers are sometimes paid by units of work accomplished, as in bins filled or trees pruned, instead of by the hour. Justices will consider whether employers should pay agricultural workers for their rest breaks over-and-above, an agreed upon wage.
