Jan 22, 2021California General Waste Discharge Requirements for Wineries approved
On January 20, 2021, the State Water Resources Control Board adopted a Resolution for the California Environmental Quality Act Mitigated Negative Declaration for the Waste Discharge Requirements for Winery Process Water and associated General Order.
The final Resolution and General Order documents will be posted soon.
The State Water Board developed General WDRs for winery process water (Winery Order) that addresses land discharge of process water from wineries, grape juice storage facilities, and wine distillation facilities (hereafter collectively referred to as wineries). The Winery Order will be applicable statewide and is intended to streamline and improve permitting consistency.
The State Water Board will continue to engage the public and stakeholders as part of the Winery Order development process and this website will be updated with related documents and public meetings as they become available.
According to reports, many winery owners and industry advocates pleaded with the board to allow more flexibility for smaller wineries. They feared the cost of installing groundwater monitoring wells for the regulation could reach as high as $500,000, forcing owners to sell out or quit the business.
