New Syngenta insecticides get EPA green light

The latest insect control tool from crop protection and technology company Syngenta has received EPA registration and is available for use, subject to state approvals.

Plinazolin technology, in development for 12 years, will power five insecticide products for use in crops including leafy, fruiting vegetables, brassica and cucurbit, according to a news release. The active ingredient underwent more than 3,000 U.S. trials, the company said.

“Today marks a breakthrough moment for growers in bringing plinazolin technology to the U.S. market,” Elijah Meck, Syngenta technical product lead, said in the release. “This game-changing mode of action offers new levels of crop protection and flexibility that puts growers back in control of their operations.”

Zivalgo, a foliar-applied insecticide, provides broad-spectrum control of Colorado potato beetle, along with codling moth, citrus thrips, spider mites and other tree fruit insect pests, according to the release.

The new products belong to IRAC Group 30, with each formulation designed to maximize performance based on crop needs, pest pressure and application method.

Other plinazolin-powered products brand names include:

• Opello: This soil-applied insecticide provides control of corn rootworm, improving crop yield  with a tank mix-compatible formulation.
• Equento: This insecticide seed treatment for cereals and pulses offers an option to terminate wireworms and suppress other below-ground pests.
• Vertento: This foliar-applied insecticide for cotton, peanuts and onions targets plant bugs, thrips and mites.
• Incipio: This foliar-applied insecticide targets insect pests in brassica, cucurbit and leafy, fruiting vegetable crops.
