Heeren Brothers to build new facility in Alpine Township

The Alpine Township Board has approved the rezoning of 47 acres on 7-Mile Road west of Alpine Avenue from agricultural to light industrial, paving the way for Heeren Brothers to build a new state-of-the-art packing and distribution center.

"Heeren Brothers has been in Alpine Township a long time and they are a big asset to the township," said Trustee Jim May.

The $12 million, 150,000 square-foot facility should be completed by harvest time of 2013, according to company officials. The facility is expected to be LEED-certified.

When completed, the company will consolidate its current produce facility at 1060 Hall St., Grand Rapids, and its packing operations located at 5304 Alpine Ave., in Alpine Township at the new building. Advance Newspapers
